Formulation :
- 6H3PO4 + 6NaOH = (NaPO3)6 + 12H2O
- 6H3PO4 + 3Na2CO3 = (NaPO3)6 + 3CO2 + 9H2O
Sodium Hexameta Phosphate (SHMP) is a mixture of polymeric Meta phosphates of which the Hexamer is one. It is prepared by heating Monosodium Orthophosphate until it starts melting and the process is followed by rapid cooling.
Application :
- Sodium Hexameta Phosphate is widely used in water softeners & detergents
- Sodium Hexameta Phosphate is also used in leather tanning, dyeing, laundry work and textile processing
- SHMP is used in process called 'threshold treatment' which is softening of industrial water supplies
- SHMP is used as a sequestrant and as a food additive
